Museum of Transport and Technology

MOTAT Tramway Motorman

Show us you can describe the functions of, and safely operate, a tram as a Motorman.

A highlight of a visit to MOTAT is a ride through Western Springs Park on a vintage tram between the museum’s two sites. MOTAT's fleet of carefully restored vintage trams run regularly during opening hours carrying almost 200,000 passengers every year. We have volunteers working on our tramway from all kinds of backgrounds and experience, and we welcome your interest in joining us.

As a Motorman with the MOTAT Tramway you’ll work with the Tram Conductor to provide an excellent experience for all  tram passengers. Visitors consistently rate taking a ride on a MOTAT tram as a key highlight of their visit to MOTAT.  As a Motorman you ensure that the trams are operating to standard and run safely for everyone to enjoy.

You will learn how to:

  • Complete pre-service and end-of-service activities.
  • Operate a tram in accordance with the MOTAT Tramway safety system under the Railways Act.
  • Take corrective action during emergencies.

Criteria:

- You must be prepared to  join our team of keen TRAMWAY volunteers and be rostered on to the Tram service which operates everyday, except Christmas Day.

- You must have successfully completed the MOTAT Tramway Conductor EduBit before attempting the MOTAT Tramway Motorman EduBit.

- A MOTAT Tramway Motorman must be well presented, maintain safe tramway operating processes at all times and enhance the passenger experience.

- You must be medically fit as we will organise for you to undertake a  P Endorsement Medical for Passenger Vehicles as a part of this training.
